Miss Pasta? Get This Vegetable Slicer!

I have to admit it, I’ve never been a huge fan of spaghetti. When I was younger, it always gave me a terrible stomachache and I dreaded having it served for dinner. Good thing I grew up in a German meat-and-potatoes kind of family then, huh? I wouldn’t have done so well if I were Italian…

I digress.

Despite my lack of spaghetti enthusiasm, there is definitely something to be said about the amazing variety of delicious sauces that can be created to actually make pasta taste pretty dang awesome. A nice tomato marinara, a nutty pesto, or even just a simple garlic and olive oil glaze is something definitely worth including in your recipe bank. Not to mention pasta is pretty easy to cook and is generally a crowd-pleaser.

So now that you’ve started eating Paleo, pasta is more or less off the table right?

Not so fast! Just because you’ve given up grains doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the family favorite pasta dinner. Enter the World Cuisine Tri-Blade Plastic Spiral Vegetable Slicer.

I found this gem as a Groupon for 50% off, and I decided I had to try it. If it worked, then I could be enjoying delicious veggie pasta, both spaghetti and fettuccine style, as well as thinly sliced sweet potato chips. If it didn’t work, well, I guess I could just cut my losses.

I received the slicer in the mail and couldn’t wait to try it. I eagerly purchased an armful of zucchini from the Farmer’s Market, and busted out the slicer when I got home. I wasn’t sure what to expect, since I tend to overestimate how useful kitchen tools will be until I start using them and decide they’re not worth the effort.

I was extremely pleased (and surprised) to discover that the Tri-Blade Spiral Vegetable Slicer was definitely worth the investment. This veggie slicer is not only easy to use, but works great and is a breeze to clean. I made a huge mound of skinny strands of zucchini noodles, and decided not to cook them since they were so tender and had a little bit of a nice crunch. I heated up some organic tomato sauce, picked some fresh basil from the garden, and suddenly had a gorgeous little meal in front of me.

Belissimo!!

Later in the week, I also experimented mixing the zuke noodles with about a third rice noodles plus homemade meat sauce in order to make a more macronutrient-complete meal. One small problem I had with this recipe – I couldn’t stop eating it! It was so delicious that I literally had to ziplock all the leftovers immediately so I could stop eating. But even though I pigged out a little (ok a lot), it was nice to know that the majority of the food baby I was carrying was actually zucchini and not pure simple carbohydrate. Veggie slicer FTW!

    Okay, I’m sold! One thing I hate about eating paleo is the amount of time it takes to slice veggies, and my lack of ideas on how to better enjoy a wider variety of them like zucchini, which, let’s face it, is about as boring and flavorless as they come. But easily make noodles out of them in less time than cooking a whole spaghetti squash and dump sauce on them? Heck yeah! I’ll be ordering this tonight :)

    What I find fascinating is that the one you posted a link to has 304 reviews, the average of which is 4.5 stars. Yet this one: http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Tri-Blade-Spiral-Vegetable-Slicer/dp/B006THC75E/ref=pd_sbs_k_3

    Both appear to be identical in every way, but this one has only 7 reviews and most of them extremely negative. They both also seem to be sold by the same company which is using Amazon merely as a fulfillment shipper. Perhaps this one is a cheap knock-off of the one you posted, which would explain the slightly cheaper price.

    I think I’ll trust the more pricey one you mentioned :)

    This has been on my wish list for awhile. I read about a similar product on Modern Paleo Warfare (http://www.modernpaleowarfare.com/2011/09/carbonara-without-carb-pasta-bitches.html) and have wanted one ever since. Maybe someday… :-)

    Joy! I have this, only I have hte “low rent” Spirooli *as seen on TV!!!*

    Its my most favorite of all things I have ever Seen On TV!! :} I also like to lemon pepper zucchini and toss a mound on the George Foreman and cook the crap out of it and make a mound of not-hash browns!! WHOOT!
